WORKSHOPS

Build Your Journal Article

Finding the time to write a paper can be difficult; knowing how to write a paper that fits the expectations of reviewers in our field can be next to impossible without experience. To help you, I run a series of programs that provide you with the structured discipline and guidance necessary for you to build your paper, step-by-step.

Led by me, and getting feedback from peers, you will learn tips and tricks to help you meet the implicit publishing “rules of the game”, develop a plan of attack by completing structured exercises, and find the time in your busy schedule to actually write your paper.

Join us in one of our online programs and build your journal article in a structured, disciplined and supportive way.

Programs

Each of the “Building Your Paper” programs covers a different part of the journal article process - including designing and writing the front end (probably the hardest part of writing a paper in our field), developing and writing the discussion (the next most difficult part), and strengthening and editing your draft (in other words, doing what you can to avoid negative reviewer comments).

The programs combine the discipline of group writing sessions with the specific guidance needed for publishing in management and business with the personalized advice of motivational diagnosis and action planning recommendations.

All “Building Your Paper” Programs include:

  • Videos each week that cover tips-and-tricks to watch in your own time before the workshop

  • 3-hour workshop of structured activities to build, develop and write your paper

  • Expectation that you will work on the paper for 15-30 minutes every day in between workshops

  • 30-minute one-to-one clinic session with me to discuss problems you are having with your paper and ways to move it forward

Personalized Advice

At the start of every program, you will be asked to complete a survey which provides insight into your relationship with writing. You will receive a report outlining recommendations to help you use your strengths to develop a writing habit and to identify actions you can take to improve upon areas that may be reducing your writing effectiveness. These reports build on each other so you can see your improvements with every program you take.

Each program also includes a “clinic” week where you and I will meet to discuss problems you are having with your paper and ways to help you move forward. You might be struggling to find a way of framing your contribution, or deciding on a target journal, or unsure about how to structure your hypotheses (or something else!).

Together we can identify directions you can take to make sure you keep building your paper.
Testimonials from Workshop Participants

"I've been to quite a few academic writing trainings & workshops before, but not of them have been as helpful as yours. Your program is extremely comprehensive, from reflecting on my own personality and writing habits to journal analysis, time management, planning & writing. At the same time, it covers all the details with actionable steps for each component of manuscript crafting. It's rare enough to find a training programme that's able to achieve either such comprehensiveness or nuance, and your sessions have mastered both ends of the spectrum.

Plus, you bring a wealth of experience as an amazing researcher yourself. You have a deep understanding of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods, as well as prowess in both empirical and theoretical work. No doubt this comes from years and years of your research and editorial experience, which I highly appreciate.

Another thing I have to emphasise is that you are such a great listener and communicator. Your ability to quickly and precisely understand my half-baked ideas and immediately offer constructive suggestions for improvement was most impressive. And your various ways of conveying nuanced and abstract ideas within the workshops were clear and insightful. Both the vivid metaphors and concrete examples helped me a lot.

I would absolutely recommend your sessions to any academic who wants to transform their writing game. Apologies for repeating myself, but thank you so much for putting together such an incredibly helpful programme!”

Lecturer, Information Management

"Very friendly, structured and supported sessions to support the development of writing! Been able to work out a direction that I never thought of.”

Assistant Prof, Management

"Your workshops have reignited my enthusiasm and passion for writing. Often, when facing difficulties in my writing, I feel like I have nowhere to turn. Your courses provide me with an excellent opportunity for dialogue. I particularly enjoy my daily half-hour writing sessions. They make me feel fulfilled each day, allowing me to find moments of tranquility amidst the busyness of administrative work. They reinforce my identity as a scholar rather than merely a manager/lecturer serving others. I appreciate this model: lectures, clinic, collective writing and discussions on writing reflections. Thank you Kerrie!”

Professor, Management

"The conversations we had around my working paper in the sessions have had a massive impact on the outlook of the paper (and my confidence!).”

Many Business Schools will cover the cost of training and writing retreats. This falls under the same remit and so is likely to be covered by your School. I am happy to work with your Finance Office and provide an invoice if that is preferable. Alternatively, when you book with me, I can provide payment details at that point.
